Closing The Loop
The concept of Rawganix Farm is that of as closed a loop as possible. Obviously nothing is an island and all things depend on all other things to some degree. Therefore our aim is to develop a small biological circuit within what is the obviously larger one around it, and so on to infinity. The Rawganix farm biological circuit is planned to supply produce to the larger biological circuits whilst disrupting those circuits as little as possible.
Naturally any cell in the collective web of life has effect on the rest of the collective web because it is part of the web. However it does not have to damage the collective web further than what the collective web has been designed to cope with, integrate and use. For example when an animal dies its components return to the biosphere and some toxins are produced. But unless the animal’s tissues were polluted with excess heavy metals/toxins, the transition of the components back to building blocks in the biosphere will not be unduly disruptive to the operation of the biological systems around it. In any event, biological systems will deal with toxins, but collateral damage to the biosphere and the time involved in remediation will depend on how far the toxic shock deviates the course of the circuits of the biosphere from the inbuilt design of the system.
With this in mind Rawganix Farm is exporting biological output to the greater biosphere and therefore it is reasonable to assume that it should import in some way in order to balance with the larger biosphere.
The hope is that the imports will be limited to things that would cause less impact on either biosphere by import, than by sourcing within the smaller Rawganix Farm biological cell. These imports may change as technology is unearthed to enable the Rawganix Farm circuit to be more complete and enable it’s disruption to the larger biosphere to decrease.

Imports felt necessary to minimise disruption to the larger biosphere are: infrastructure items, machinery aids, energy, minerals and biological inputs.

Rawganix Farm long term aims and implementation plan.

An organic farm with diverse plant species, depending on fertility managed primarily by adequate soil nutrition balanced by the incorporation of ruminants and poultry into the cycle.
The closed loop comprised of ruminants, hay, grain and fowl, supplying high quality saleable produce and by products (stubble, waste hay, manure) for compost to complete the loop.
Organic produce to include: milk, beef, eggs, lamb, hay, grain, turf, olives, seasonal vegetables, fruit and compost.

Production Methodology

Beef and Lamb as above.
Our herd is comprised of various breeds of cows, but we now have an heritage breed bull. His calves seem to be very good and we will keep his heifers to build up the herd. We are killing two steers just before Christmas. As we build the numbers up we are trying to keep our regular customers happy. The meat has been received very well. Very tender and not too fatty.
A quarantine paddock is being developed with fodder and shade trees for any possible imports of livestock.
Meat sheep will be used to maintain the grass around shedding, on the turf, in the olive grove and fruit orchard and around dams where possible.

Eggs The Rawganix Farm objective is to produce pasture fed poultry and eggs, Movable pens are planned for this process. All needs other than the pasture will be supplied on a daily basis. Day old, unvaccinated chicks will be raised for two to three weeks in enclosed sheds as necessary.
As most poultry diseases appear to arise from confinement, static housing, overpopulation and inadequate natural nutrition it is hoped that with this system disease will be minimal.
Quarantine, primarily natural remedies and culling are planned to deal with disease and injury.
There is an on farm cool room to preserve the quality of the eggs until sale.

Hay and Grain Lucerne, other fodder crops and grain will be grown primarily for on farm use. Natural inputs such as minerals, fish hydrolysate, compost and other biologicals will be employed for plant nutrition.

Fish	Three farm impoundments have been stocked with Silver Perch and Golden Perch for later harvesting or recreational fishing. As stocking rates are low, the dams natural ecosystem are expected to supply all nutritional needs of the fish.

Olives	An existing olive grove is being tended organically for supply of olive oil and table olives. The oil is extracted at a small private crushing facility where it is ensured that isolation of our product is assured to maintain organic status.

Seasonal vegetables and fruit A small prototype orchard, vineyard and vegetable garden is being established using only organic inputs. The food will be sold as close to harvest as possible and a cold room will be utilised to maintain the integrity of the produce.
